Six 18-month transformational agricultural projects have commenced in Western Australia after grants worth $1 million were awarded by the South‐West WA Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub (SW WA Hub). There are eight Hubs across Australia funded through the Federal Future Drought Fund, with only one located in WA. Led by the Grower Group Alliance (GGA), the SW WA Hub supports farmers and communities in preparing for drought by connecting them with regional agricultural experts, innovation and new practices.
MADFIG serves as a Node Lead for the SW WA Hub. Since funding began in 2022, we have had the privilege of developing various local trials, research and a wide range of extension events. Our future involvement promises to continue contributing to the resilience and innovation of the agricultural sector in our region and beyond.
One of the key SW WA Drought Hub projects we are currently involved in is the WaterSmart Dams* project – A three-year program which aims to develop knowledge and water planning tools for farmers who need their dams to function effectively in all years. The project will investigate solutions such as renovating existing dams, constructing new dams and implementing evaporation suppression and runoff technologies.
