This project investigates the potential of deep placement of Phosphorus using deep ripping as a strategy to improve the productivity and profitability of grain production systems in the eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia. While this practice has been extensively researched in Eastern Australia, its performance under the heavy soil types typical of this region remains uncertain. This project aims to test suitability of equipment chosen and the transferability of existing knowledge and determine whether similar benefits can be realised under Western Australian conditions.
The project is designed as a research-led trial program rather than a direct extension or adoption initiative. Its primary focus is to generate robust, locally relevant evidence on the agronomic and economic performance of deep Phosphorus placement over time.
The project will capture insights from innovators and early adopters who have already experimented with this practice in the region. These insights will be used to identify the practical barriers, risks and operational challenges associated with implementation. By combining trial data with grower attitudes and experience, the project aims to build a clearer picture of where and when deep Phosphorus placement may be a viable option might be an option in the Far Eastern Wheatbelt of WA.
The findings will help define the key conditions required for successful adoption and identify the factors that limit broader use.
