MADFIG’s Strategic Review revealed the need for a strong and cohesive network in the Eastern Wheatbelt to build the capacity needed by local people and communities facing unique challenges due to drought and other seasonal conditions specific to our remote, rural and regional area of Australia.
In 2024 MADFIG was successful in gaining funding support through FRRR (FDF) and began the establishment of an Agribusiness and Mentoring Program designed to foster a collective knowledge base, strengthen local networks and provide opportunities to learn and share through carefully curated place-based events. These included the highly successful pilot of “Cultivating Profit” workshops for younger/less experienced farmers, researchers and industry. In doing this we also supported Associate Member Renae Piggott to deliver the pilot and subsequent workshops in Merredin, Mukinbudin and Beacon. “Cultivating Profit” workshops were subsequently further extended as part of SW of WA’s Drought Hub program.
In October 2025 the MADFIG Management Committee voted to continue this important initiative. We want to extend the adoption of practices to build drought and climate resilience in the community and farming industry, supporting the mental health and well-being of individuals. This project will enhance, not compete, with ongoing adoption and extension activities, training and events.
